UPDATED:

There’s a reasonable chance the marine layer will mostly burn off Wednesday when the San Diego County Fair begins its nearly month-long run in Del Mar, and “June gloom” could temporarily vanish Friday, the National Weather Service says.

Temperatures also will be at or slightly above normal at 1:10 p.m. Wednesday when the Padres begin play against rival Los Angeles at Petco Park. The daytime high could reach 74 degrees.

The only regions of concern are the county’s deserts, where things are heating up. Borrego Springs is expected to reach 107 degrees Wednesday and Thursday, 106 Friday and 108 Saturday, forecasters say. The temperatures will be a little be higher than forecast for Phoenix, which is unusual.

Such heat is a main ingredient in producing the summer monsoon, which can spark lightning. But forecasters aren’t expecting the kind of instability common with the monsoon.

Most of the county has received only about half of its seasonal rainfall. As a result, East County is experiencing extreme drought conditions, according to the U.S. Drought Monitor. The western half of the region is experiencing severe drought, a lower ranking. There is no significant rain in the long-term forecast. Forecasters say it’s possible the greater San Diego area will be largely dry until the fall.
