Brandon Lockridge on Tuesday logged the first multi-hit game of his career. Both were infield hits, but he did so coming off the bench to do his part in a 3-2 win in extra innings.
His reward: His first start in 10 days, as Lockridge will man left field bat eighth in Wednesday’s 6:45 p.m. start on Padres.TV.
Lockridge is hitting just .219/.275/.281 through 71 plate appearances, but he’s 7-for-7 in steal attempts and at least gives the Padres a plus defensive option in left field.
Gavin Sheets (.799 OPS) had begun to play the spot more frequently, but he was injured on a play there on Sunday, sat on Monday and served as the DH on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Sheets will play first base to give Luis Arraez (.727 OPS) a DH day, which means Luis Campusano is the odd man out on a day in which the Padres are facing a lefty.

Campusano had been DHing against left-handers since his call-up, but he is 0-for-13 with six walks and six strikeouts across his two stints this year in the majors.
Tuesday’s win kept the Padres (35-24) a game behind the Dodgers (37-24) in the NL West.
The Giants (33-28) have slipped four games off the Dodgers’ pace atop the NL West, have lost all four meetings so far against the Padres and haven’t scored more than four runs in a game since a 9-1 win over the Athletics on May 16.
So on Wednesday, the Giants shook up their roster.
First baseman LaMonte Wade Jr. (.546 OPS) and catcher Sam Huff (.598 OPS) were designated for assignment and infielder Christian Koss (.541 OPS) was optioned to Triple-A Sacramento.
In their place, the Giants signed first baseman Dominic Smith to a big-league deal and outfielder Daniel Johnson and catcher Andrew Knizner were added to the active roster.
Smith hit .233/.313/.378 with six homers in 93 games for the Red Sox and Reds last year and had eight homers and a .782 OPS in 45 games this year for the Yankees’ Triple-A when he was cut loose.
Johnson, 29, is a .200/.242/.333 hitter across 95 big-league plate appearances dating back to 2020 and was hitting .272/.312/.534 with six homers in 26 games at Triple-A Sacramento.
Knizner, 30, is a .210/.279/.317 hitter across parts of six years in the majors (887 plate appearances) dating back to 2019.
Both Smith and Johnson are in Wednesday’s lineup:
#SFGiants (33-28) vs Padres (35-24), 101 to go

2) Lee CF

Wednesday’s pitching matchup
Padres RHP Nick Pivetta (6-2, 2.74 ERA)
He is coming off his first walk-less start since his Padres debut, as he struck out eight over six innings of two-run ball. The victory was his first since April 29, although Pivetta has thrown three straight quality starts (2.00 ERA). He allowed three runs in 5⅓ innings in beating the Giants in late April in San Diego. Pivetta has a 4.32 ERA over five road starts.
Here is how Pivetta has fared against current Giants:
Giants LHP Kyle Harrison (1-1, 2.51 ERA)
He’s making his third start of the season in place of the injured Justin Verlander. In that role, he has struck out nine, walked three and allowed two runs over nine innings. The 23-year-old has made two starts in his career against the padres, allowing six runs in 5⅔ innings in a loss in 2023 and two runs in six innings in a win last year.
