Re “Ambulance story makes it official: Mayor Gloria has jumped the shark” (May 23): City leaders are investigating moving ambulance service in-house despite the very profitable alliance model under which the exiting ambulance service has been operating for the past 19 months. This new model of operation provided the mayor with $17.3 million to use to offset the existing city budget deficit.

Given the mayor and City Council’s history of mismanagement of just about every aspect of city government, moving a highly profitable element of contracted services in-house — where employees would receive retirement benefits as city employees and, thereby, incur significantly higher operating costs — makes no sense.

Why break something that is working?
