Friday summer concerts in the park

Carlsbad will run its summer TGIF Concerts in the Parks from June 20 to Aug. 22, featuring a range of music from country, rock, pop and funk to R&B, Cumbia, Americana and doo-wop. The concerts are from 6 to 8 p.m. Fridays and gates open at 4 p.m. The schedule for Stagecoach Community Park is June 20, The Highwayman Show (vintage country); June 27, Full Strength (Top 40, funk and dance); July 11, The Reflexx (’80s pop and new wave); and July 18, The Cold Fact (soulful R&B). The lineup at Calavera Hills Community Park is July 25, Kimba Light (Cumbia); Aug. 1, Shakedown String Band (Americana/jam band); and Aug. 8, The Honeydrops (doo-wop, rockabilly from the ’40s to ’60s). The last two concerts are at Alga Norte Community Park on Aug. 15 featuring Wayward Sons (power chord rock nostalgia), and Aug. 22, Euphoria Brass Band (modern New Orleans-style jazz). torrey pines varsity boys tennis team helps seniors stay fit
CARMEL VALLEY: High school tennis team helps seniors at retirement community keep fit The Torrey Pines Varsity boys tennis team developed a tennis program to help older adults keep fit. The team demonstrated the program to a group of residents at Torrey Pines Bayshire Senior Living in Carmel Valley. of the tennis team, coached by David Fritz, devised a way to help residents with hand/eye coordination using a sponge ball, string and ping-pong paddles, which was a big hit. Also, the team demonstrated volleying tennis balls back and forth in a confined area. Salsa Under the Stars

The free series “Salsa Under the Stars” featuring Latin music will run from 4:30 to 7:30 p.m. on various Tuesdays through Sept. 30 at Otay Ranch Town Center. The series will feature the Manny Cepeda Orchestra quartet with music and dancing for all ages. Scheduled concerts are June 3, June 24, July 8, July 29, Aug. 12, Aug. 26, Sept. 16 and Sept. 30 (special hours 4 to 7 p.m. for the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Celebration). Book and plant sales at library

The Friends of the Chula Vista Library will hold a three-day book sale from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. June 7-8 and from 1 to 3:30 p.m. June 9 at the library, 365 F St. Proceeds go to the Chula Vista Library and its programs. Parade and Fair

The Descanso Town Hall Association holds the Descanso Day Parade and Fair on June 7 at 24536 Viejas Grade Road. New arts festival downtown

East County’s Artivál San Diego arts festival is from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 7 in downtown El Cajon. The free, all-day event at Main and Magnolia spotlights the diverse local creative scene through art, music and food. The event will feature more than 50 artists, live music, interactive installations and a variety of food trucks. Sycuan Cup Golf Tournament

The Sycuan Band of the Kumeyaay Nation is set to present a total donation of $100,000 to four local charities during its 34th Sycuan Cup Golf Tournament on June 4 at the Singing Hills Golf Club, 3007 Dehesa Road. The tournament will bring together Sycuan Tribal Council , event sponsors and beneficiaries to raise funds for the local charities, which education and social, health and human services. The invitational tournament will kick off with a beneficiary award ceremony at Singing Hills Golf Club. Laurel and Hardy Club screens movies

The San Diego Laurel and Hardy Club, Saps at Sea, will screen favorite movies from 4:30 to 8:30 p.m. June 7 at First Lutheran Church of El Cajon, 867 South Lincoln Ave. Films include “Block-Heads” and “The Revenge of the Sons of the Desert.” The group will also show “You’re Darn Tootin’” with live piano accompaniment by local musician Russ Peck. The San Diego Air & Space Museum is hosting an Aviation Collectable Swap Meet and Model Contest from9 a.m. to 1 p.m. June 7 at its Gillespie Field Annex, 335 Kenney St. Highlights include prizes in various categories in the Model Contest. Animal shelter runs summer camp

Summer Animal Camp at Rancho Coastal Humane Society runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday to Friday June 16 to Aug. 15. Weeks 1, 2, 3, 7 and 8 are for campers ages 6-10 and Weeks 4, 5, 6 and 9 are for campers ages 11-14. The Animal Camp is an educational experience that includes hands-on interaction with animals along with arts, crafts and outdoor activities. Scholarships available. Free Pet Vaccination Clinic

The Rancho Coastal Humane Society will host a free Pet Vaccination Clinic from 9 a.m. to noon June 14, while supplies last, at Brock’s Pet Food Bank on the animal shelter’s North Campus at 389 Requeza St. Vaccinations include DAPP for dogs, H for cats, and rabies. Pet loss

One-on-one, 20-minute telephone pet loss consultations are offered through the Rancho Coastal Humane Society. The next consultations can be scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. June 7. Fees waived for Adopt-a-Pet Day

Rancho Coastal Humane Society will be among more than 150 animal shelters in California that will waive pet adoption fees on June 7 for adult dogs, cats and rabbits (puppies and kittens not included) as part of the second annual California Adopt-a-Pet Day. The event is hosted by the California Animal Welfare Association, San Francisco Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals. The goal is 5,000 pet adoptions in one day. The shelter will be open 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. that day. Visit  www.sdpets.org.

Craft Faire at golf course

The nonprofit Hidden Meadows Community Foundation will hold a Craft Faire from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 8 at Boulder Oaks Golf Course, 10333 Meadow Glen Way East in Hidden Meadows. Valley Vibes Fiesta

Valley Vibes, a free, family-friendly fiesta, is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. June 1 at the Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead, 12655 Sunset Drive. There will be interactive exhibits, food, crafts and live music courtesy of North Park Rock-n-Blues Band. More than a dozen partner organizations showcase wildlife in the watershed. Visitors can participate in demonstrations of outdoor skills, get up close with reptiles, meet adoptable senior dogs, learn to track wildlife and interact with conservation experts. The event is hosted by San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy and San Dieguito River Park t Powers Authority.

LA MESA

Firefighters host pancake breakfast fundraiser

The Heartland Firefighters of La Mesa will host a Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser for all ages from 8 a.m. to noon June 8 at La Mesa Fire Station 11, 8034 Allison Ave. There will be pancakes, eggs, sausage, coffee and orange juice. Proceeds benefit the Heartland Fire Explorers Program. This year’s event will feature emergency preparedness training. The public can receive training in several areas, such R, basic first aid, and crime prevention. There will be training “stations” with information. Firefighters will give cooking demonstrations and answer questions. Cost is $5.

Community event explores art scene

Oceanside Museum of Art and Oceanside Art Walk are kicking off Street Level x Art Walk, a new summer community event series to explore Oceanside’s creative scene. The next event is from 5 to 8 p.m. June 6 at Oceanside Museum of Art, 704 Pier View Way, with free museum ission, live entertainment and creative vendors along the Art Walk tour in downtown Oceanside. The event features singer and sound healer Celeste Barbier and an artist tour of Mary Jhun’s Exhibition “In Losing Sleep, I Painted.” The event will also feature local artists selling handmade goods on the terrace and in the museum store. Screening of ‘Dog Day Afternoon’

The movie series A Man Alone continues at 6 p.m. June 2 featuring a screening of “Dog Day Afternoon” at the Civic Center Library Community Room, 330 N. Coast Highway. Fundraiser for plane crash victims

The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial and San Diego Nice Guys are running a fundraiser to help military families replace their vehicles destroyed when a small plane crashed May 22 in the military community in the Tierrasanta neighborhood. Funds will be distributed by the local Armed Services YMCA, located near the disaster. Santee Swim Days

Santee residents can swim for free from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. June 7 at the activity pool at the Santee Aquatics Center at the Cameron Family YMCA, 10123 Riverwalk Drive. Limited lap swimming will also be available. Proof of residency with valid ID and address is required. Participants should arrive early to get a session wristband; there is a maximum pool capacity.

Free movie screening in park

A free screening of “Moana 2” is from 5 to 10 p.m. June 7 as part of the County of San Diego’s Summer Movies in the Park series. Bring a blanket or chairs and warmer clothing for the evening. The city of Santee is also holding the free Santee Summer Concert Series from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursdays, starting June 12 and running through Aug. 14, at Town Center Community Park East, 550 Park Center Drive.

Assistance League  gives scholarships

The Colors of Vista art exhibition, presented by the Vista Public Arts Commission, will be on display at the Civic Gallery through June 27. Barbershop choir to sing at library

The Music Men Chorus, North County’s barbershop a cappella choir, will perform at 1 p.m. June 4 at the Vista Branch of the San Diego County Library, 700 Eucalyptus Ave. The free concert is offered by the Library as part of its Feeling Fine In The Summertime Wednesday afternoon adult activity series. Operation HOPE puts on gala fundraiser

Vista-based nonprofit Operation HOPE will put on its HOPE Illuminated Gala at 5 p.m. June 14 at the Hidden Barn, 762 Taylor St. The event raises money for the nonprofit’s mission to help homeless community by offering a safe, ive place to rebuild their lives and regain independence. Garden club meets

The Vista Garden Club will be reviewing its recent Flower Show with a slide show and awards presentation at 1:45 p.m. June 6 in the Azalea Room at the Gloria McClellan Senior Center, 1400 Vale Terrace Drive.
