The local Hindu-American community in San Diego celebrated Teacher Appreciation Week, from May 5-9, with a Guru Vandana event in Poway.
The event was held at the Mickey Cafagna Community Center on May 4 to show gratitude, honor and appreciation for teachers’ dedication and hard work, according to the organizing groups, which included the Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh and the Hindu Education Foundation.
More than 40 teachers and principals from school districts across San Diego and south Riverside counties attended the celebration. Other participants included Poway Unified, San Diego Unified, and Temecula Valley Unified school district representatives in addition to legislative, school board, cultural, educational and faith leaders, said Sandhya Jaiswal, the parent of a Poway Unified student and member of Hindu Swayamsevak Sangh.

In the ancient Indian language of Sanskrit, the word “Guru” refers to teachers. Gu is defined as darkness and Ru is defined as remover of. The word “Vandana” means reverence.
“The atmosphere was filled with joy and gratitude, as each educator was recognized for their unwavering commitment to the pedagogical profession and for inspiring students in their pursuit of knowledge, excellence and success,” said Jaiswal, who lives in Rancho Bernardo. “The event emphasized the deep respect and iration that the Hindu community holds for their teachers.”
Nearly 250 people attended the two-hour celebration that included traditional Hindu performances by children, a recognition ceremony of teachers and principals, guest speakers and an Indian vegetarian dinner.
Students showcased the richness and diversity of the local Hindu community through an appreciation song, yoga demonstration, musical performance, an interactive game and fusion dancing, Jaiswal said. Traditional Indian clothes were available in addition to Mehndi/Henna tattoos, and a photo booth captured memories of students and families with their teachers.

The annual event aims to promote and encourage the continued recognition and celebration of the teachers’ roles in shaping young minds and lighting the path of knowledge, Jaiswal said.
