President Donald Trump said Tuesday he has ordered the military to stop bombing Houthi targets in Yemen, an order that affects the San Diego-based aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, whose planes have heavily targeted the Houthis in recent weeks.
Trump said he issued the command because the Iran-backed Houthis had agreed to stop launching missiles and drones at commercial and military shipping in the Middle East.
The Carl Vinson arrived in the region on April 15 and has been tly launching attacks with the carrier Harry S. Truman. The air strikes have mostly focused on command and control facilities and air defense systems, according to the U.S. Central Command.
The Truman has been on deployment since late September and is likely to return to its berth in Norfolk, Virginia, soon. The Vinson deployed from San Diego in mid-November. The Central Command hasn’t indicated when the flat-top will head back to Southern California.
