Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the death of a 1-year-old girl who was found unresponsive in a licensed daycare center in Rancho San Diego on Tuesday.
Deputies and paramedics responded to a call about a medical emergency around 11:30 a.m. at the home on Penasco Drive off Jamacha Road. When they arrived, they found the baby unresponsive on the living room floor, sheriff’s Lt. Juan Márquez said in a news release.
Paramedics immediately began R and took the child to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The sheriff’s homicide unit investigates unexplained deaths — or cases where death is likely — involving those under the age of 18 “where the injury and/or death is not the result of willful action by another person,” Márquez said.
A family friend set up a fundraising page to help with funeral expenses. According to the GiveSendGo campaign webpage, the baby died during her second week at the daycare.
Anyone with information about the baby’s death was asked to call the Sheriff’s Homicide Unit at 858-285-6330 or 858-868-3200 after hours. Callers who wish to remain anonymous were asked to call Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
